Seed Production Agronomist
$70,000-$90,000 per year

The main purpose of a Production Agronomist is to manage all field actions related to the production of hybrid seed. The main goal is to produce seed that meets or exceeds our internal and our customer’s standards and expectations. We provide guidance, confident and persuasive advice, solid agronomy and any assistance necessary to produce seed crops of the highest quality and yield. This all being performed and managed with the highest of integrity and safety practices in mind.

KEY ROLES AND ACCOUNTABILITIES

To help you succeed, there are a few key roles you will be accountable for. You must “Get it, Want it, and Have Capacity” for each of these roles to be successful in this job.

ROLE 1: CULTIVATE GROWER RELATIONSHIPS

o Work alongside grower partners to produce a good yielding and high-quality hybrid seed crop.

o Advising growers on fertility requirements o Communicate with growers an irrigation schedule to help with crop emergence, and good plant stand establishment

o Advise on proper pesticides applications

o Making sure flower timing between the male and female plants are optimal, and advise the farmer on any trimming that must be completed

o Work with grower to time the male removal

o Maintain good relationships with current and past growers

o Onboarding of new growers when necessary

ROLE 2: FIELD OPERATIONS

o Choosing fields that fit specific criteria for seed production, such as crop rotation, isolation, and proper volunteer management

o Monitor fields for insect, weed, and disease pressure

o Proper placement of pollinators, flowering timing, avoiding fungicide and insecticide applications, field moisture, etc

o Ensuring fields are rogued in a timely manner (volunteer rogueing, or off-type rogueing) o Ensure all fields are ready for inspections (isolations are clean, no prohibited weeds, off-types within tolerance.)

o Make sure field is ready for harvest (no prohibited weeds, seed colour and moisture at acceptable levels)

o Monitor bin temperatures to ensure seed quality is maintained after harvest

ROLE 3: EQUIPMENT MAINTENANCE

o Calibrate planters to proper seeding rates, and depths

o Ensuring equipment is clean and ready for use (swather, combine, augers, bins, etc.)

ROLE 4: DATA MANAGEMENT

o Making sure records of field actions are accurately kept

o Conducting season review work, with the goal of continuous improvement from season to season

o Responsible for working with the accounting department to make sure accurate information is available regarding grower settlements.

ROLE 5: SAFETY

o Certified Seed Production representative on the Safety Committee

o Always operating in a safe manner; in accordance with the policies of HyTech Production

QUALIFICATIONS AND ACCREDITATIONS REQUIRED

· Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture

· Certified Crop Advisor

Pay: $70,000.00-$90,000.00 per year
