Town of Coaldale and the Coaldale Chamber of Commerce cite rising COVID numbers in community and surrounding area as a risk to group gatherings
Coaldale, Alberta (October 20, 2020)
The Town of Coaldale and the Coaldale Chamber of Commerce have jointly agreed to postpone the Main Street Block Party, originally scheduled for Friday, October 23. The Block Party was planned as a celebration to mark the completion of the Main Street revitalization project which began its construction phase earlier this year, however with a recent increase in COVID cases locally it was decided that to hold such an event would be irresponsible.
“We were looking forward to a nice celebration of the beautiful work that has been done on Main Street and are disappointed that the Block Party needs to be postponed,” said René van de Vende, President of the Coaldale Chamber of Commerce. “However, it just isn’t responsible to hold a public gathering when the COVID numbers are climbing in our area.”
While the Town and Chamber agreed that now is not the right time to congregate, they look forward to having the event in the spring to commemorate the reopening of Main Street.
“Both the Town and the Chamber are very excited about the event, but we also recognize that given the escalating COVID cases in the region and the recent outbreak in town, the responsible thing to do is to postpone the event until the spring,” said Cameron Mills, Manager of Economic Development for the Town of Coaldale. “It is important that we demonstrate leadership, and as such, we had to make this difficult decision. We will have a great celebration for our community to enjoy the new space when it’s safe to do so, and I’m sure it will be worth the wait.”
