Coaldale Public Library is seeking an Assistant Librarian who will play a key role in supporting daily operations, leading staff, and helping shape the library as a welcoming, innovative community space.
About the Role
The Assistant Librarian is an essential part of the library’s leadership team. You’ll help ensure smooth day-to-day operations, provide guidance and support to staff, and take an active role in shaping services, programs, and community connections.
From overseeing evening and weekend operations, to planning events, coordinating gallery exhibits, and managing our unique Skate Library — this is a varied and engaging role with real impact.
What You’ll Do
- Provide leadership and support to front-line staff and volunteers
- Act as Manager on Duty during evenings and Saturdays
- Assist with staff scheduling by coordinating coverage and supporting shift planning
- Respond to patron concerns and help ensure a positive library experience
- Liaise with the Town to coordinate building maintenance and repairs
- Monitor and order library and program supplies
- Provide circulation, reference, and readers’ advisory services
- Assist patrons with computers, eReaders, and digital resources
- Lead the planning and coordination of special events and larger programs
- Collaborate with the Head Librarian and Program Coordinator on ongoing programming and creative ideas
- Coordinate the McCain Gallery, including scheduling exhibits, working with artists and schools, and installing displays
- Manage the Skate Library collection, including cataloguing items and maintaining equipment (training provided if needed)
- Build relationships with community organizations and support outreach initiatives
What We’re Looking For
- Minimum 2 years’ experience in a library or public service environment
- Supervisory or leadership experience
- Strong interpersonal and customer service skills
- Confident decision-making and ability to apply policies appropriately
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office and library technologies
Minimum Education:
- Diploma or undergraduate degree in Library and Information Technology or a related field
Preferred:
- Master of Library and Information Studies (MLIS)
Candidates with a graduate degree in another field and a willingness to pursue an MLIS may also be considered.

Schedule
- Tuesday–Thursday: 1:00pm – 9:00pm
- Friday–Saturday: 9:00am – 5:00pm
This schedule ensures leadership coverage during evenings and weekends.
